| Q: | Why do you use Linux rather than Windows?
| |
| A: | Security and Stability. Linux has a long history of being a powerful, reliable and secure platform from which to develop web sites and web based applications.
| |
| Q: | Is your server powerful enough to handle my site?
| |
| A: | Absolutely. Our primary server runs dual Pentium III 933Mhz CPU's with 1 Gigabyte of Error Correcting RAM and a SCSI-based, RAID 5 disk. Additional hardware is ready to be implemented should additional capacity be required.
| |
| Q: | How secure is your server?
| |
| A: | Our server is protected by a professional-level firewall appliance that very effectively detects and blocks unauthorized access. Authorized administrator-level access is restricted to 2 individuals, resulting in high-accountability.
| |
| Q: | How do you protect my data?
| |
| A: | Data is protected in 4 ways. First, we employee a RAID disk drive system that eliminates the failure of one hard drive as a source of system failure. Second, we have a bi-weekly rotation of tapes that stores critical system data. Third, we do an hourly system synchronize from the main server with a backup server. This backup server has exactly the same contents and structure of the primary machine and is ready to take over in the events of total system failure. Last, we perform a nightly, off-site data synchronize that ensures critical data is not destroyed in the case of a total loss (fire, flood, etc).

| Q: | What if the power goes out at your facility?
| |
| A: | Our servers are run off of large UPS power units. These provide surge prevention as well as providing power in the case of a momentary/short-term outage. In the event that a power interruption is longer than 5 minutes, a diesel-powered generator automatically starts and provides electricity until normal line power is restored.
| |
| Q: | Is your facility climate-controlled?
| |
| A: | Yes, the server room is heated in the winter and air-conditioned in the summer.
| |
| Q: | What if I suddenly need more internet bandwidth. Is that available?
| |
| A: | Absolutely. Our internet provider resides in our building and has redundant OC-48 fiber-optic connections to the internet. 1 OC-48 has the same bandwidth as 1656 T-1 lines. That's 3,835 GIGABITS per second. This resource is available to us and our relationship with the provider means that we can usually have same- or next-day increases of bandwidth when needed.
| |
| Q: | What web-related applications do your run on your server?
| |
| A: | We provide a number of robust, industry-standard scripting and database applications on our server. They include, but are certainly not limited to, PHP, Perl, CGI, PostgreSQL and MySQL.
| |
| Q: | What email capabilities are available when we host our site with you?
| |
| A: | We provide a number of email features are built-in or available for you to take advantage of. They include web mail, automatic virus protection, content filtering, SPAM filtering and automated 'out-of-office' response. If you have an internal mail server, we can also setup our server so that all email directed to your domain name goes straight to your server
| |
| Q: | I need my site to be secure. Can you deal with that?
| |
| A: | Absolutely. Having a secure site requires the purchase of a secure server certificate. We will help you to acquire the certificate and then install it when it is issued.
| |
| Q: | I have code that uses FrontPage Extensions. Do you support these?
| |
| A: | No, not at the current time. However, the functionality of most FrontPage extensions can be cleanly replaced with comparable code in many other ways
| |
| Q: | Can I administrate my own web area?
| |
| A: | Yes. We can provide you with FTP access to the base directory where your web site files reside. This is only available in hosting packages without hourly maintenance.
| |
| Q: | Do you have disk-limits or quotas on email?
| |
| A: | Yes. We have a limit of 5MB per email box under our standard hosting agreements. However, the server does allow you to temporarily exceed that amount up to 20MB for a period not exceeding 2 weeks. This means that if you have a large attachment, you can still get it as long as you don't leave it on the server for more than 2 weeks. More space can always be obtained on an account-by-account basis. |
