Q:Why do you use Linux rather than Windows?
A:Security and Stability. Linux has a long history of being a powerful, reliable and secure platform from which to develop web sites and web based applications.
Q:Is your server powerful enough to handle my site?
A:Absolutely. We run Dell Poweredge servers with AMD Opteron64 and Intel Xeon CPU's, 4 Gigabytes of ECC RAM and high-speed U320 Serial Attached SCSI hard drives in a RAID 5 configuration. Additional hardware is ready to be implemented should additional capacity be required.
Q:How secure is your server?
A:Our servers are protected by professional-level, redundant firewall appliances that very effectively detect and block unauthorized access. Authorized administrator-level access is restricted to 2 individuals, resulting in high-accountability.
Q:How do you protect my data?
A:Data is protected in 3 important ways. First, we employee a RAID disk drive system that eliminates the failure of one hard drive as a source of system failure. Second, we do an hourly system synchronize from our main servers to a local backup server. This backup server has exactly the same contents and structure of the primary machine and is ready to take over in the events of total system failure. Third, and perhaps most importantly, we perform a nightly, off-site data backups that ensures critical data is not destroyed in the case of a total loss (fire, flood, etc).
Q:What if the power goes out at your facility?
A:Our servers are run off of several large UPS power units. These provide surge protection as well as providing power in the case of a momentary/short-term outage. In the event that a power interruption is longer than 10 seconds, a propane-powered generator automatically starts and provides electricity until normal line power is restored.
Q:Is your facility climate-controlled?
A:Yes, the server area is air-conditioned year round.
Q:What if I suddenly need more internet bandwidth. Is that available?
A:Absolutely. We have an OC-48 fiber-optic connection to the internet which has the same bandwidth as 1656 T-1 lines. That's 3,835 GIGABITS per second. This resource is available to us and our relationship with the provider means that we can usually have same- or next-day increases of bandwidth when needed.
Q:What web-related applications do your run on your server?
A:We provide a number of robust, industry-standard scripting and database applications on our server. They include, but are certainly not limited to: PHP, Perl, CGI, PostgreSQL and MySQL.
Q:What email capabilities are available when we host our site with you?
A:We provide a number of email features are built-in or available for you to take advantage of. They include web mail, automatic virus protection, content filtering, SPAM filtering and automated 'out-of-office' response. If you have an internal mail server, we can also setup our server so that all email directed to your domain name goes straight to your server
Q:I need my site to be secure. Can you deal with that?
A:Absolutely. Having a secure site requires the purchase of a secure server certificate. We will help you to acquire the certificate and then install it when it is issued.
Q:I have code that uses FrontPage Extensions. Do you support these?
A:No, not at the current time. However, the functionality of most FrontPage extensions can be cleanly replaced with comparable code in many other ways
Q:Can I administer my own web area?
A:Yes. We can provide you a number of capabilities from simple FTP file access to complete web-based content management systems. Let us know your needs and we can create a system tailored to your requirements.
Q:Do you have disk-limits or quotas on email?
A:Yes. We have a long-term limit of 50MB per email box under our standard hosting agreements. However, the server does allow you to temporarily exceed that amount up to 100MB for a period not exceeding 2 weeks. More short and long term server space can always be obtained on an account-by-account basis.
